An Overview of Dr. Maryam Noroozian's Expertise and Professional Activities

Dr. Maryam Noroozian is a Full Professor of Neurology at the Department of Psychiatry, Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS). She graduated from Tehran University of Medical Sciences from the beginning of her studies through the completion of her neurology specialty training. In 1997, after achieving a national rank in the Neurology Board, she joined the Department of Psychiatry.


Academic Activities

Educational and Clinical

  • Teaching at Tehran University of Medical Sciences since 1998.
  • Initiated the Memory Clinics in Iran (MCI) to train cognitive impairment and dementia in 2018–2019, which gained international recognition.
  • Conducted the national online course Cognitive Impairment in Clinical Practice (CICP) during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Delivered lectures and training in various medical, neuroscience, and engineering departments since 1998.
  • Founded the first Memory and Dementia Clinic in Iran in 2003.
  • Established the first Department of Cognitive Neurology and Neuropsychiatry in Iran.
  • Designed and developed the guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease within Iran's healthcare system.
  • Launched the Geriatric Medicine program at Tehran University of Medical Sciences.
  • Established the Fellowship in Cognitive Impairment, Dementia, and Neuropsychiatry in Iran.
  • Founded the Scientific Association for Cognitive Impairment, Dementia, and Neuropsychiatry in Iran.
  • Developed educational materials for dementia prevention for Iran's elderly population under the Ministry of Health and Medical Education.
  • Contributed to the development of Iran's National Dementia Document under the Ministry of Health and Medical Education.
  • Managed and supervised clinical training rounds at the Cognitive Impairment and Dementia Clinic at Roozbeh Hospital.
  • Trained on comprehensive neuropsychological assessment of cognitive impairment tailored to patients' language, literacy, and culture.
  • Trained on the diagnostic assessment and treatment of neuropsychiatric and dementia patients based on a holistic formulation.
  • Established and expanded a growing team of enthusiastic students who are currently working and conducting research in this field alongside her.


Memberships and Scientific Collaborations

  • Member of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Panel of Alzheimer’s Disease International (ADI).
  • Member of the Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics (SBMT).
  • Member of the Middle East branch of the Society for Brain Mapping and Therapeutics (SBMT).
  • Member of the Strategic Council for Iranian Women in Neuroscience
  • Collaborated with the WHO’s mhGAP operational program for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy within Iran’s healthcare network.
  • Member of the WHO's Global Dementia Observatory (GDO) Advisory Committee.

Collaborative partnership with McGill University, the ORIGAMI

NeuroDataScience laboratory, McGill, Montreal, Canada (Partner 2) in efforts to

assess and develop eliable MRI-based multimodal biomarkers for

neurodegenerative diseases using multiple dataset comprising North-

  • American and Iranian populations. 2024.
  • Established the first Cognitive Neurology, Dementia, and Neuropsychiatry Research Center (CNNRC) with support from donors facilitated by Dr. Noroozian.


Research Activities

  • Published over 140 international papers in reputable international journals (H-index = 33 as of February 22, 2025).
  • Founded the first Cognitive Neurology, Dementia, and Neuropsychiatry Research Center (CNNRC) in Iran in 2023.
  • Founded the first Smart Home for Cognitive Health and Rehabilitation for the elderly in Sari, Iran (2018).
  • Extensive experience in multidisciplinary research in cognitive neurology, psychiatry, neuroradiology, pharmacology, neuroscience, engineering, and artificial intelligence.


Public Education

  • Produced educational content for the elderly on cognitive health and Alzheimer’s disease prevention.
  • Developed educational content for social media platforms (Instagram, Telegram) and podcasts.
  • Provided scientific consultation for documentary and non-documentary films related to dementia.
  • Participated in numerous interviews in print and broadcast media on cognitive disorders and prevention strategies.


Awards and Honors

  • First rank in the 44th National Neurology Board at Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Iran (1997).
  • Winner of the 10th Razi Medical Science Research Festival Award (2004).
  • First recipient of the Akhaveini Award for pioneering work in neuropsychiatry in Iran (2018).
  • Winner of the international Metrodora Award for leadership in mental health within science and medicine (2022).
